A system and method for determining whether a temperature measurement made with an infrared thermometer is accurate is disclosed. An infrared sensor array is used to detect infrared radiation from a target object. By analyzing the relative values of output signals from the individual sensor elements, a determination can be made whether radiation from the target object sufficiently fills the field of view of the detecting element of the instrument. A temperature measurement is considered accurate if this criteria is met. |

1. A non-contact infrared measurement system, comprising:
an infrared sensor array having a plurality of sensor elements that generate output signals related to infrared energy detected by the sensor elements; a processor communicatively coupled to the infrared sensor array, wherein the processor compares the output signals and, based on the comparison, determines whether the detected infrared energy sufficiently fills a field of view of at least a portion of infrared sensor array or is sufficiently uniform over at least a portion of the infrared sensor array; and an output device that provides notification of the determination. |
