In a process for producing combustible gases from liquid hydrocarbons, the hydrocarbon is contacted in a coking zone 1 with a fluidized bed of coke-covered particles to produce a stream of gas leaving by line 4, coke-covered particles are continuously withdrawn by line 6 and passed to a heating zone 7 where they are heated by partial combustion, the heated cokecovered particles being in part recycled to the coking zone 1 by lines 12 and 5 and in part passed by lines 12 and 14 to a secondary heating zone 13 and further raised before transfer by line 17 to a gasefication zone 18 where they are gasefied with steam to produce a stream of water gas leaving by line 23 and mixing with the gas produced in the coking zone 1. Residue from the gasefication zone is returned to the heating zone 7 by line 20. The liquid hydrocarbon has a viscosity not less than 45 S.S.U. at 210‹ F. and preferably not less than 160 S.S.U. at 210‹ F. and may be a petroleum hydrocarbon. The temperature in the coking zone may be between 1450-2200‹ F., preferably between 1800-2200‹ F., and in the gasefication zone may be between 1600-2500‹ F., preferably between 1800-2200‹ F. The pressure in the gasefication zone is preferably between 25-125 p.s.i.g. and the amount of steam supplied thereto is usually from 30-200 wt. per cent based on the liquid feed to the coking zone. When the coking zone is operated at temperatures above 1600 ‹F. the secondary heating zone 13 may be omitted and either or both of the heating zones may be a transfer line burner with settling zones and cyclones.
