Increasing low light tolerance in plants

Methods and materials for modulating (e.g., increasing or decreasing) low light tolerance in plants are disclosed. For example, nucleic acids encoding polypeptides that confer plants with tolerance to low light are disclosed as well as methods for using such nucleic acids to transform plant cells. Also disclosed are plants having increased low light tolerance and plant products produced from plants having increased low light tolerance.

A method of modulating the low light tolerance of a plant, said method comprising introducing into a plant cell an exogenous nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having 95% or greater sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 112, wherein a plant produced from said plant cell exhibits a phenotypic difference relative to a corresponding control plant under low light conditions, wherein said phenotypic difference is a shortened hypocotyl.
