Low surfactant iodine topical disinfectant

Iodine-containing germicidal compositions are disclosed that remain physically stable for extended storage periods with little to no iodine complexing agent being present. The compositions employ a mixture of emollients, such as glycerin and ethoxylanolin, to create a composition that in certain embodiments presents a cloudy or emulsion-like appearance.

1. A ready-to-use germicidal composition comprising:
from about 25 to about 50% by weight of a primary emollient selected from the group consisting of glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, polyethylene glycol, and mixtures thereof; from about 0.05 to about 10% by weight of a water-soluble lanolin derivative; and from about 0.05 to about 1.5% by weight of iodine, wherein the weight ratio of iodine to said water-soluble lanolin derivative is from about 0.3 to about 10; said composition comprising less than 1% by weight of iodine complexing surfactants and iodine complexing polymers, wherein the weight ratio of iodine to total iodine complexing surfactants and iodine complexing polymers is greater than 0.5, said composition being ready to apply to an animal's teat without further dilution.
