792,476. Flexible pipe couplings. K.A.C., Ltd. Aug. 3, 1956 [Aug. 3, 1955], No. 22332/55. Class 99(1). In a flexible coupling comprising two tubular end parts 7, 8, connected by a universal joint comprising a gimbal ring 1 pivotally connected to the parts 7, 8 about mutually perpendicular axes 11, 12, a flexible sleeve 21 surrounding the universal joint is fluid tightly secured to the parts 7, 8 and the base of the ring 1 is of the same diameter as that of the parts 7, 8, to provide a substantially smooth flow path. The ring 1 is pivoted to enlarged ends 9, 10, of the parts 7, 8 by pairs of pins 11, 12, engaging slots 5, 6, in the ring on axes at right angles to one another. The sleeve 21, consisting of a flexible metallic bellows, is clamped against a conical surface 20 on a flange 18 on the part 8 by a screw-threaded clamping ring 23 carrying a protecting shield 29 of metal or asbestos and is clamped against a conical surface 19 on a flange 17 on the part 7 by a ring 22 which is keyed against rotation, to prevent distortion of the bellows, by a key 26 and forced into position by a screw-threaded ring 27. In a modification, the ring 23 screws on to a locking ring separate from the flange 18 and the other end of the bellows 21 is welded to the flange 17. Specification 627,120 is referred to.
