A method for making multiple single molecule receptors in a nanopore structure includes depositing a first material and a second material by a physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique onto different selected interior surfaces of a nanochannel and functionalizing a surface of the first material, the second material, or both the first and second materials with a chemical compound having at least two functional groups. The first and second materials can be the same or different and form patches having diameters of about 1 to about 100 nanometers (nm). Also disclosed are embodiments of a nanopore structure including multiple single molecule receptors. |

1. A nanopore structure comprising multiple single molecule receptors, the nanopore structure comprising:
a substrate having a first surface and an opposing second surface; a nanochannel extending from the first surface to the opposing second surface and defining an interior surface; a first material disposed onto a selected area of the interior surface of the nanochannel, the first material forming a first patch having a surface area of about 3 to about 10,000 nm2; a second material disposed onto a different selected area of the interior surface of the nanochannel, the second material forming a second patch having a surface area of about 3 to about 10,000 nm2 and the first material and the second material being the same or different; wherein the first and second materials disposed on the interior surface of the nanochannel do not fully encompass the circumference of the nanochannel; and a chemical compound having an analyte binding functionality disposed onto at least one of the first and second materials. |
