PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an image lag by optimally controlling the amount of discharging light and suppress the optical fatigue and the deterioration of a photosensitive body, to prolong the life of the photosensitive body.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a discharging ability adjustment mode. In this mode, a solid patch part and a blank part are formed in the first round of a photosensitive body 3K, and a halftone patch part is formed in the second round. The potential difference between a first surface potential at a place in the halftone patch part, which has been the solid patch part, and a second surface potential at a place in the halftone patch part, which has been the blank part is detected. When the potential difference is beyond a prescribed value, the amount of light of a discharging lamp 22K is increased until the potential difference is the prescribed value or less, and then a printing operation is started.
