PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary electric machine which includes a rotary member for air cooling and a rotation speed detection gear and is capable of further shortening a length in an axial direction and appropriately securing a route for cooling air.SOLUTION: The rotary electric machine includes: a shaft 10 which is supported by a bearing 15; a rotor 20; a stator 30; and a substantially cylindrical housing 40 which fixes the stator and the bearing. Between the bearing 15 and the rotor, a rotation speed detection gear 50 is mounted and within the housing, a fin 22 is mounted as the rotary member. On a gear-side end face 44 in the housing closer to the rotation speed detection gear, an intake port 42 is provided at a position near the shaft and on a surface of the gear-side end face, a recessed intake passage 41 is formed from the intake port to an outer peripheral part. On a cylindrical surface of the housing from the gear-side end face to the stator, an exhaustion port 43 is provided and on the route for the cooling air from the intake port to the fin, the rotation speed detection gear is disposed.
