PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of accurately detecting PM while using an air-fuel ratio sensor that becomes active.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine 10 comprises: an engine body 12 that communicates with an exhaust passage 18; an ECU 50 that controls the engine body 12; an A/F sensor 52 that is provided in the exhaust passage 18 and that is active at a preset first temperature Tlower than a PM combustion temperature; and a heater 66 that can heat the A/F sensor 52 up to a preset second temperature Tequal to or higher than the PM combustion temperature. The ECU 50 detects PM on the basis of a difference ΔA between an output value Afrom the A/F sensor 52 at the first temperature Tand an output value Afrom the A/F sensor 52 at the second temperature T. The ECU 50 may be configured to perform determination processing, for example, for determining that an amount of accumulated PM is smaller than a preset reference amount if the output value Ais higher than a threshold A, and determining that the amount of the accumulated PM is equal to or larger than the preset reference amount when the output value Ais equal to or smaller than the threshold A.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
