Disclosed are an outdoor unit of an air conditioner sensing snow deposited thereon and a method for controlling the same. A sensor is installed in the outdoor unit to sense whether or not the snow is deposited through an optical sensor when the snow is deposited in a deposited snow sensing area included in the sensor. A value sensed by the optical sensor is transmitted to a control unit, and the control unit compares the value with a reference value when the snow is not deposited and operates a fan by controlling a fan operation unit when the control unit receives a value different from the reference value. Wind generated by operation of the fan removes the snow deposited in a fan guard, a discharge unit, and the deposited snow sensing area and prevents the fan from malfunctioning due to the deposited snow.
