According to an embodiment of the present invention, an asymmetric optical waveguide comprises: a core; and a cladding covering the core, and having an asymmetric cross section. The cladding may include a pair of grooves in a longitudinal axis direction to couple an evanescent wave to the outside by having a birefringent property. According to an embodiment of the present invention, due to the asymmetric cross sectional cladding having the pair of grooves in the longitudinal axis direction, a longitudinal axis mode of a core mode has reduced effective refractivity by coupling to external air since the evanescent wave is expanded, thereby sensitively reacting to an external environmental change by having the birefringent property. |
