The present invention relates to an improved pico hydro device for generating hydropower under 5kW pico hydropower. The device comprises a permanent magnet generator (100) that is rotatably driven by the impeller (101) via a coupling member (100b) to produce a direct electric current responsive to rotation of the impeller (101) caused by a stream of fluid. The device can be characterized by an elevated water supply unit (102) configured for providing water in a continuous manner through a conduit (103) into the impeller (101). The impeller (101) comprises at least two L-shaped blades (101a) with an airfoil element (101f) attached thereto and outlet nozzles (101c) and are arranged at a regular distance through a conduit adapter assembly (103a) such as pipe tee or Y-tee. The outlet nozzle (101c) preferably ejects the water at increased water velocities in a first direction to produce a repulsive force tending to move the respective L-shaped blade (101a) in a second direction opposite the first direction. The direct electric current can be stored in a battery (104) and converted to an alternating electric current using an inverter (105).
