Provided are a cathode for a lithium ion secondary battery, said cathode being useful for configuring a lithium ion secondary battery which has excellent charge and discharge rate characteristics and in which the oxidative decomposition of a nonaqueous electrolytic solution can be prevented, and a lithium ion secondary battery using the cathode. The cathode for a lithium ion secondary battery comprises a cathode mixture containing a cathode active substance expressing a potential of at least 4.5 V by a metallic lithium reference, conductive assistants and a binder, wherein: the conductive assistants include a first conductive assistant comprising carbon black and a second conductive assistant comprising hardly graphitizable carbon; in the cathode mixture, the ratio (SC1/SC2) [wherein SC1 stands for the surface area of the first conductive assistant, and SC2 stands for the surface area of the second conductive assistant] is controlled to 6.5-70 inclusive; and, in the cathode mixture, the sum SE of the surface area SA of the cathode active substance and the surface area SC of the conductive assistants is controlled to 90-400 cm2/cm2 inclusive per unit coated area of the cathode mixture. |
