Disclosed is a precast concrete beam (100) suitable for use in the construction of bridges. The disclosure notes that presently available Tee beams and Super Tee beams are typically used in the construction of bridges. Super Tee beams are advantageous in strength and allow for longer bridge spans but are heavy and its “U” shaped upright portion cannot be externally inspected for cracks or the like. The precast concrete beam (100) includes a substantially planar web (110), a pair of flanges (121, 122) and a plurality of diaphragms (132). The planar web (110) extends longitudinally between ends (101) of the beam (100). The pair of flanges (121, 122) are formed integrally with the web (110) and each flange (121, 122) extends laterally from an elongate edge of the web (110) and extends longitudinally between the ends (101) of the beam (100) to define a structure engaging surface (120) of the beam (100). The plurality of diaphragms (132) are formed integrally with the web (110) and the flanges (121, 122) wherein the diaphragm (132) spans laterally between a side of the web (110) and one of the flanges (121, 122). The diaphragms (132) are spaced apart along the beam (100) to support the flanges (121, 122). |
