Compositions comprising deoxycholic acid

Disclosed herein are compositions comprising deoxycholic acid and a steroidal deoxycholic acid precursor or byproduct containing a 12-B hydroxy group wherein if the DCA precursor or byproduct is 12-&bgr; DCA or an ester thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of each thereof, then the DCA precursor or byproduct is present in less than 6% of the total amount of the DCA or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and the DCA precursor or byproduct. Also disclosed is the use of these compositions in the manufacture of a medicament for treating conditions such as obesity and fat redistribution syndrome.
