A method of forming an alloy comprising a surface of titanium, steel, or aluminium with a coating material of copper or aluminium is described. The surface is moulded and then heated or sintered to create a solid, which has many cavities. Open cavities are closed using hammering or shot peening. The coating material is applied to the surface an is heated so as to diffuse the material into the surface and form a eutectic composition, resulting in melting of the surface and material. Once the temperature is no longer at the eutectic composition point and solidification has occurred, the surface undergoes hot isostatic pressure to close any remaining cavities. The coating material dissolves completely and leaves a smooth, homogeneous surface. |
