Disclosed is a method for text inputting. The method comprises receiving a set of segments (514) from a text field (504) and analysing the set of segments (514) to determine at least one of a target subtext or a target meaning associated with the set of segments (514). The set of segments (514) comprises one or more segments (514) of interest selected relative to a current position of an input cursor (516) in the text field (504). The method further includes identifying a set of candidate emoticons (506), presenting the set of candidate emoticons (506) for entry selection at the current position of the input cursor (516) in a priority order based on a respective strength of the association between each emoticon in the set and at least one of the target subtext or the target meaning. Each candidate emoticon in the set of candidate emoticons (506) has an association between the candidate emoticon and at least one of the target subtext or the target meaning, and the set of candidate emoticons (506) comprises one or more candidate emoticons (506). When an entry selection for a set of selected emoticons from the set of candidate emoticons (506) is received the set of selected emoticons is inserted into the text field (504) at the current position of the input cursor (516). The application of the one or more segment identification rules identifies the segment of interest as immediately following the current position of the input cursor (516) in the text field (504). |
