The invention relates to the field of chemistry and regards a chelating compound and method of use thereof. The chelating agent is a compound of general formulaand comprises a polymer backbone having a plurality of carbon atoms, and reactive groups being coupled to separate carbon atoms of the backbone which are carboxylate groups or carboxylic acid groups, wherein R is hydrogen, an aliphatic organic group or cation, R', R" and R''' each is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aryl group, n is an integer. The claimed chelating compound has high adsorption capacity and high efficiency of binding metal ions contained in water solutions purified using the same, the compound being insoluble is water that provides a simple separation thereof from the purified liquid. |
