PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article discrimination device in a horizontal bag-making filling machine where article discrimination whether or not a content is different from an article to be packaged and so on can be performed.SOLUTION: In an article discrimination device in a horizontal bag-making filling machine, light projection means 44 and light reception means 46 are disposed for irradiation with near-infrared rays in an obliquely vertical direction passing between a pair of traveling bodies forming a second conveyor 24 as a supply conveyor; a shield 31 is disposed immediately above the light reception means 46 at a position lower than an article W carried by the pair of traveling bodies; and the adhesion of falling objects such as the waste of the article W on the light reception portion of the light reception means 46 is prevented. Accordingly, the reliability of the detection accuracy of the light reception means 46 can be maintained.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
