Embodiments are directed to a method of adjusting an index, wherein the index identifies a location of an element within an array. The method includes executing, by a computer, a single instruction that adjusts a first parameter of the index to match a parameter of an array address. The single instruction further adjusts a second parameter of the index to match a parameter of the array element. The adjustment of the first parameter includes a sign extension.

1. A computer program product for adjusting an index, wherein the index identifies a location of an element within an array, the computer program product comprising:
a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith, wherein the computer readable storage medium is not a transitory signal per se, the program instructions readable by a processor circuit to cause the processor circuit to perform a method, the program instructions comprising: a single instruction that performs an adjustment of a first parameter of the index to match a parameter of an array address; wherein said single instruction further performs an adjustment of a second parameter of the index to match a parameter of the array element; and wherein said adjustment of said first parameter comprises a sign extension of said first parameter.
