In an optical network, it is difficult to perform a failure recovery at a multiple-failure occurrence time without resulting in reduction of the use efficiency of the optical network. In view of this, an optical communication system of the present invention comprises an optical network management apparatus and an optical node apparatus. The optical network management apparatus comprises: an optical path setting means that sets auxiliary paths, which are associated with the respective ones of a plurality of operating paths on the same physical route, to serve as mutually different physical routes; and a failure-time optical-path setting means that sets, upon occurrence of failures on two or more of a plurality of physical routes, failure-time auxiliary paths, which are obtained by compressing the bands of auxiliary paths, on physical routes on which no failures have occurred. The optical node apparatus comprises an optical transmission/reception means that transmits/receives optical signals by use of failure-time auxiliary path information representative of a result of the setting of the failure-time optical-path setting means. |
