The invention relates to a method for thermochemically treating a ferrous material in two steps. The ferrous material is treated in both steps above the austenitisation temperature. In a first step, the ferrous material is nitrided above the austenitisation temperature. The treatment in the second step takes place at a temperature which is lower than in the first step.
