<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive unit for a liquid crystal display element, a liquid crystal display device, and a drive method for a liquid crystal display element that achieve high picture quality even for a dynamic picture image by improving color breakup and generating few animation pseudo contours. <P>SOLUTION: A first sub-frame turns to a drive state for a maximum value n of drive gradation in a prescribed field when the drive gradation is 1. The first and (n/2 + 1)th sub-frames turn to a drive state when the drive gradation is 2. As drive gradation increases, the number of sub-frames turning to a drive state increases as time passes. In a field next to the prescribed field, when the drive gradation is 1, the (n/2 + 1)th sub-frame turns to a drive state. When the drive gradation is 2, the first and (n/2 + 1)th sub-frames turn to a drive state. As drive gradation increases, the number of sub-frames turning to a drive state increase one by one as time passes.
