Allocating uplink resources to user equipment for cellular and direct communications

The application discusses the allocation of resources to user equipment for uplink cellular and direct device to device communications. A user equipment method of requesting uplink resource from a network node is disclosed. The method comprises: transmitting a scheduling request; generating a status report the status report providing an indication of an amount of the uplink data and whether the uplink data is to be transmitted as a cellular communication to at least one other user equipment transmitted via at least one network node or whether the uplink data is to be transmitted as a direct communication directly to at least one other user equipment; and in response to receiving from the network node a resource grant granting a resource to the user equipment for transmitting the status report, transmitting the status report within the granted resource.
