In a switch of the type described in the parent Specification, the magnetic shunt elements comprise pairs of magnetic strips adjacent pairs having axes perpendicular to one another. Figs. 2a, 2b represent sections of a switching element in planes at right angles to each other through the contacting elements. The pairs of strips N1, N2, N5, N6, N9, N10 (the middle pair shaped to include the coil operating C) run perpendicular to the direction of motion of the contacts L and pairs of strips N3, N4, N7, N8 (shaped to include the operating and holding coils A, H1) run parallel to the direction of motion of the contacts L. Adjacent strips overlap being slotted to receive one another and complete the magnetic shunt path. Fig. 3a illustrates a 2 Î 2 assembly, the lower horizontal and rear vertical coils being omitted to reveal the casings for the contacts within. The ironwork forms a frame for holding the coils and the contact sets which are grouped in fours (i.e. four contact sets are operated per connection). The whole may be cast in an insulating rectangular block, the various terminals being brought out on parallel faces thereof. A plurality of such blocks may then be mounted compactly in a suitable framework.
