Securing a process control device within a process control plant network by determining a current set of attributes of the environment in which the process control device is located after boot up; determining if the current set of attributes adheres to a set of a necessary attributes; only allowing the process control device to communicate with another device if the current attributes adheres to the set of necessary attributes. The set of necessary attributes may be used as a seed, which is used to create a key based on the necessary attributes to allow communication. The environmental attributes may comprise a type of data to be received or transmitted, a manufacturer of the device, an ID of the process control plant, an ID of the area of the plant, a location of the device; and may further additionally include an attribute of a user. The security process may also include a sub-key, derived from the key which is indicative of a second set of necessary conditions required in order to allow the device to communicate with the network. |
