A waste disposal unit (100) for biologically hazardous waste (126) comprising: a waste reception mechanism (106) for receiving un-shredded waste (126), a housing (102, 104) having an interior containing a shredder mechanism (108) and a storage volume (130) for receiving shredded waste (132) from the shredder mechanism (108), wherein the housing (102, 104) is configured to prevent external access to the interior of the housing (102, 104), wherein in a first configuration of the waste reception mechanism (106) un-shredded waste (126) may be received from exterior to the waste disposal unit (100) into the waste reception mechanism (106) and access from the waste reception mechanism (106) to the interior of the housing (102, 104) is closed, and wherein in a second configuration of the waste reception mechanism (106) access from the exterior of the waste disposal unit (100) into the waste reception mechanism (106) is closed and access from the waste reception mechanism (106) into the interior of the housing (102, 104) is open to permit un-shredded waste (126) to pass from the waste reception mechanism (106) to the shredder mechanism (108), and wherein the waste disposal unit (100) is provided with an engagement feature configured to engage with a detachable shredder drive mechanism. |
