A resinous C-vinylpyridine polymer is reacted with chloroacetone cyanohydrin or bromoacetone cyanohydrin so that a quaternary salt of the polymer is obtained wherein at least 70% by weight of the vinylpyridine units are linearly recurring units of formula: <FORM:0852923/IV(a)/1> the remainder of the vinylpyridine units being linearly recurring units of formula: <FORM:0852923/IV(a)/2> Y in the above formulae being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and X a chlorine or bromine atom. In an example poly-4-vinylpyridine is reacted with chloroacetone cyanohydrin and bromoacetone cyanohydrin to form the quaternary salts. Other polymers mentioned are poly-2-vinylpyridine, poly-3-vinylpyridine and 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine. The polymer may be as copolymer of a C-vinylpyridine with styrene, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, N-methyl acrylamide, N-methyl methacrylamide, or N, N-dimethyl acrylamide. The quaternized polymers may be used as antistatic coatings on photographic films. |
