A locker arrangement in which a locker 2 and a portable control device (PCD) 3 are used whereby the locker 2 has or receives items with an authorization procedure for release or return of the item and the PCD 3 can provide an authorization element or identifier for the authorization procedure for access to, or return of, the item. The PCD 3 may be configured such that when within a predetermined range of the locker 2, or its controller, a communication link 4 is defined for local control dependant on the authorization element and confirmed identity of the PCD 3 and/or user. The locker 2 and PCD 3 undertake a handshake process to establish the communication link 4 which is preferably a wireless link such as provided by RFID, Wi-Fi or digital address. The locker 2 maintains an inventory of items within it and can display the inventory upon request. The locker 2 preferably comprises a number of compartments each with a sensor to detect the presence of an item within the compartment and a lockable door. Cameras may be provided with the locker to record transactions carried out with the locker 2. The locker may be able to communicate with a central controller. |
