<p>Acrylonitrile is copolymerized with a minor proportion of a tertiary aminoalkyl ester of an unsaturated acid of the general formula:- <FORM:0865814/IV (a)/1> in which R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical, R2 and R3 are alkyl radicals and n is 1 or 2, the reaction being carried out in a concentrated aqueous or aqueous alcoholic solution of an inorganic thiocyanate in the presence of a nonoxidizing free radical polymerization catalyst. Diethylaminoethyl methacrylate is specified as an example of the esters of the above formula. The catalysts used may be those specified in the parent Specification, e.g. azo compounds or substituted sulphinic acids. Also present during the reaction may be a minor proportion of one or more other monomers, e.g. vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate and styrene, and a reducing agent, e.g. thiourea dioxide or hydrazo isobutyric acid. The resulting copolymer solution may be spun into a coagulating bath to produce filaments which may be given resistance to discolouration by treatment with a phosphoric acid/polyphosphate mixture as disclosed in Specification 813,815.
