摘要 A method of forming a dielectric layer 5 on an electrode for use in a capacitor, the method comprising electropolymerising an ion from an electrolyte. Also disclosed is an electrode 4 including a dielectric layer 5, wherein the electrode 4 is carbon. Further disclosed is an electrode 4 including a dielectric layer 5, wherein the electrode 4 is aluminium, tantalum, titanium, hafnium or niobium. The ion in the electrolyte may be an anion, specifically it may be a cyano ligand. The dielectric layer 5 may contain carbon. The electrode 4 may be a mesoporous or nanoporous thin film carbon electrode, the electrode 4 may be formed of graphene, doped graphene, reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon fabric, or carbon aerogel. Applying a sufficiently positive voltage, a thin dielectric layer forms at the positive electrode, enabling the use of cell voltages higher than 3.5 V.
