The device has a primary piston-cylinder unit (15) which is arranged on the actuating element between cam of camshaft (4) and exhaust valve (2) and is configured to hold the exhaust valve in a non-closed intermediate position during engine braking mode with exhaust-gas backpressure. A secondary piston-cylinder unit (11) arranged between the cam and exhaust valve is configured as a valve clearance compensation element. The valve train-side elements (28,28a) are provided to exert force counter to and lower than adjusting action of the valve clearance compensation element. An independent claim is included for method for actuating exhaust valve of valve-controlled internal combustion engine.
