Service data flow detection in a conforming 3GPP access network having a packet modification function

A system includes: a packet processing function and a packet modification function. The packet processing function receives a packet generated by a sending application function and destined for a receiving application function. The packet includes first identifier information, and the packet processing function adds second identifier information thereto. The packet modification function: receives the packet; alters it in a way that prevents use of the first identifier information by a 3GPP conforming service data flow detection process to map the packet to a first service data flow for the sending application function; and provides the packet to a packet routing function with the second identifier information positioned in the packet to enable the packet routing function to use the second identifier information in the 3GPP conforming service data flow detection process to map the packet to the first service data flow and to a bearer for transporting the packet.

1. A method of providing priority and quality of service (QoS) for Internet Protocol (IP) packet flows belonging to a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) conforming Evolved Packet System (EPS) that have been encapsulated, the method comprising:
receiving, at a packet processing function of a network element, an unencrypted application packet; identifying, by the packet processing function, an application flow associated with the unencrypted application packet; selecting, by the packet processing function based on a type of the application flow, packet identifying information to be applied to the packet; providing, by the packet processing function to a policy definition function of the EPS via a control interface between the packet processing function and the policy definition function of the EPS, at least a portion of the packet identifying information; encrypting the application packet by a packet modification function, wherein encrypting comprises inclusion of at least a portion of the packet identifying information with the encrypted packet and wherein the packet processing function is interposed between the packet modification function and an application function sourcing the unencrypted application packet; and transmitting, by the packet modification function, the encrypted application packet to another network element via a second interface between the packet modification function and the EPS, wherein the another network element is a network element of the EPS.
