The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polymers and to an apparatus for performing this process. The apparatus comprises devices and reactors that are combined in the sequence of first a mixing device, second a flow microwave and optionally third one or more additional reactors.

Process for the preparation of polymers in a continuous mode, wherein at least two immiscible starting material flows are mixed in a mixing device, wherein one or more monomers and optionally one or more radical initiators are present in the same or in separate starting material flows, wherein the mixing device generates an emulsion with an average droplet size of 1 μm to 2000 μm from the starting material flows, wherein the temperature of the material flow in the mixing device is kept below the initiation temperature of the one or more radical initiators or kept below the polymerization or cross-linking temperature of the monomers, and wherein the mixed material flow is subsequently heated in a flow microwave to start polymerization of the monomers.
