A method comprising: directing data to first and second tiers of memory in a mobile data storage device with a controller; pre-fetching boot data to the first tier of memory from the second tier of memory, the boot data comprising metadata and personalized user data, the personalized user data comprising at least one of new passwords and user identifiers; loading the personalized user data from the first tier of memory to a node of network in response to establishing of a connection between the mobile data storage device and the node, the loading of the personalized user data and the metadata provide boot times of less than one second; calculating a predicted boot time for the pre-fetched data based on size of the pre-fetched data, the type of the first tier memory, and historical boot latency; comparing a recorded actual boot time to the predicted boot time, if the actual boot time is less than the predicated boot time, maintain the pre-fetched boot data in the first tier of memory,if the actual boot time is greater than the predicted boot time, but less than a maximum threshold, return the pre-fetched boot data in the first tier of memory to the second tier of memoryif the actual boot time is greater than the maximum threshold, upgrade the pre-fetched boot data to a higher tier of memory.
