The present invention provides an active material. The active material comprises a composite oxide having an orthorhombic structure. The composite oxide is represented by the general formula Ti_2(Nb_1-xTa_x)_2O_9 (X is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1). An average valence of niobium and/or tantalum of the composite oxide is greater than or equal to 4.95. A non-aqueous electrolyte battery using the active material can show excellent quick charge and discharge performance and high energy density.
