The invention provides a position detecting device capable of performing high-resolution, high-precision sensing. The position detecting device is provided with: a signal electrode layer in which a plurality of elongated signal electrodes, the total length of which is greater than the width thereof, are disposed with a prescribed spacing in a direction which intersects the longitudinal direction thereof; a detecting electrode layer in which a plurality of elongated detecting electrodes, the total length of which is greater than the width thereof, are disposed with a prescribed spacing in a direction which intersects the longitudinal direction thereof, and intersecting each of the signal electrodes; an insulating layer disposed between the signal electrode layer and the detecting electrode layer; a position input panel laminated to the signal electrode layer or the detecting electrode layer; and a detecting unit which detects variations in the electrostatic capacitance between the signal electrodes and the detecting electrodes; and the position detecting device detects an indicated position on the position input panel, indicated using an indicating body, by means of the variation in the electrostatic capacitance detected by the detecting unit. The configuration is such that the signal electrode layer and the detecting electrode layer each comprise two elemental electrode layers laminated together. |
