A method of manufacturing a security document comprises: (a) providing a polymeric substrate 2 having first 2a and second 2b surfaces; (b) applying a curable material 11 to a first region R1 of the substrate 2 on its first surface 2a; (c) forming a relief structure 13 on the curable material 11; (d) applying one or more coating layers 3, 4 to the first 2a and/or second 2b surface(s) of the substrate, the coating layer(s) 3, 4 being absent on at least a part of the first region R1; (e) applying a masking substance 15 to the first surface 2a of the substrate 2, excluding at least a second region R2 which includes at least part of the first region R1, the overlapping portions of the first R1and second R2 regions defining a third region R3; (f) depositing a reflection enhancing material 12 onto the first surface 2a of the substrate 2 such that, in the third region R3, the reflection enhancing material 12 is deposited onto the cured material 11 and wherein the masking substance 15 prevents retention of the reflection enhancing material outside of the second region R2. The steps (b), (c) and (d) may be performed in any order. Step (f) may include washing the substrate 2 to remove excess reflection enhancing material 12. A security document made by the above method is also disclosed. |
