摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode catalyst for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell with high performance, which is a catalyst that carries a small amount of platinum or platinum alloy on a carbon carrier, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same.SOLUTION: In the catalyst that carries platinum or platinum alloy on the carbon carrier, the carbon carrier is a carbon material containing a nitrogen atom and/or boron atom and a transition metal. The carbon material is obtained by conducting steps at least one time or more respectively, which comprise: a metal removing step of heat-treating a carbon precursor containing a nitrogen atom and/or boron atom and a transition metal in an inert gas atmosphere at a temperature of 500°C-1,500°C, then pulverizing the composition so as to have an average particle diameter of 2.0 μm or smaller, and further removing the transition metal contained in the pulverized material; and an activation step of heat-treating the pulverized material in an activation gas atmosphere.
