The invention comprises the lead and cadmium salts of S-(1,3,5,7-tetramethyloctyl) mercaptoacetic acid. They may be prepared by reacting a water-soluble S-(1,3,5,7-tetramethyloctyl) mercaptoacetic acid salt with a water-soluble salt of lead or cadmium in an aqueous medium and recovering the resulting lead or cadmium S-(1,3,5,7-tetramethyloctyl) mercaptoacetate, e.g. by extracting with an organic solvent and evaporating the extract to dryness. The extract may be mixed with a plasticizer before distilling the solvent, thereby producing a solution of the lead or cadmium salt in the plasticizer such as dioctyl or dibutyl phthalate (see Group IV (a)).ALSO:Polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride is stabilized against deterioration by ageing and/or heat by means of lead or cadmium S - (1,3,5,7 - tetramethyloctyl) mercaptoacetate. Plasticizers may be present and the lead or cadmium salt may be incorporated in the form of its solution in a plasticizer such as a phthalate ester, e.g. of butyl, octyl or 2-ethylhexyl alcohol. |
