摘要 Selective intra and/or inter-prediction video encoding. Based upon anticipation of a future communication channel rate (e.g., actual physical layer channel rate) or video data rate of a communication channel, a given prediction mode for video encoding may be adaptively selected. Prediction of a future or expected value corresponding to at least one parameter associated with the communication channel (e.g., channel rate, video data rate, etc.) can drive operational mode selection/adaptation in accordance with video coding. Alternatively, one or more actual measured values corresponding to at least one parameter can drive operational mode selection/adaptation in accordance with video coding. In some instances, neither intra-prediction nor inter-prediction is performed in accordance with a non-feedback operational mode, and an input video signal undergoes compression (e.g., without intra-prediction and/or inter-prediction). Transitioning between various video coding operational modes may be made in different manners and based on different criteria as desired in various given applications.

An apparatus comprising: a video encoder configured to predict an available video data rate of a wireless communication channel based at least in part on a forward-looking anticipation of a change of the available video data rate without consideration of a size of an output bit stream by the video encoder, and in response, to adaptively encode a first portion of an input video signal using an intra-prediction operational mode and to adaptively encode a second portion of the input video signal using an inter-prediction operational mode to generate the output bit stream that corresponds to the input video signal; and a radio configured to support wireless transmission of a signal that corresponds to the output bit stream via the wireless communication channel, wherein the adaptively encoding using the inter-prediction operational mode when the change of the available video data rate falls below a first threshold and the intra-prediction operational mode when the change of the available video data rate rises above a second threshold that is greater than the first threshold, the adaptively encoding based on the at least in part the forward-looking anticipation of the change of the available video data rate of the wireless communication channel.
