Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for recognizing a walking environment. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus for recognizing a walking environment: detects a user′s walking pattern by using sensing data; generates walking characteristics of the walking pattern based on similarity between a plurality of similar walking data, extracted from a plurality of databases, and the walking pattern; and can infer the walking environment corresponding to the walking pattern by applying the walking characteristics to a predetermined learning model.
