PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase transmission speed in a PON system.SOLUTION: A PON system 10 transmits and receives an optical signal between an OLT 11 and a plurality of ONUs 12. The PON system 10 uses two kinds of linear polarization orthogonal to each other for communication between the OLT 11 and the ONUs 12. The OLT 11 is configured to be able to transmit a first downlink optical signal Swith first wavelength λ1 and linear polarization in the X-axis direction and a second downlink optical signal Swith first wavelength λ1 and linear polarization in the Y-axis direction.
