A solid state lighting device (10) comprises a base end (11), at least one solid state emitter (20) and a heatsink (40) disposed between the base (11) and the at least one solid state emitter (20). The heatsink (40) is arranged to dissipate heat generated by the at least one solid state emitter (20). The lighting device (10) has a substantially central axis (2) extending in a direction between the base end (11) and an emitter mounting area (13, 13') in which the at least one solid state emitter (20) is mounted. The heatsink (40) is arranged to permit unobstructed emission of light generated by the at least one solid state emitter (20) according to each emission half-angle (¸) of greater than 90 degrees relative to the central axis (2) around an entire lateral perimeter of the solid state lighting device (10). |
