1. A method performed by a base station, the method comprising:
receiving channel quality information from a mobile station; selecting one of a plurality of predetermined sub-maps based on a mapping between the channel quality information and the predetermined sub-maps, wherein the mapping indicates more than one sub-map of the sub-maps is selectable for a given channel quality information; and for a downlink transmission, indicating the selected sub-man as an index value to the mobile station in control information, wherein the channel quality information comprises a rate of acknowledgements (ACKs) to negative acknowledgements (NACKs) (ACK/NACK rate) received from the mobile station and a channel quality indicator (CQI) provided by the mobile station, and wherein and the selection of the sub-map is based at least in part on the ACK/NACK rate and the CQI.
