Certain example embodiments relate to improved seals for glass articles. Certain example embodiments relate to a composition used for sealing an insulted glass unit. In certain example embodiments the composition includes vanadium oxide, barium oxide, zinc oxide, and at least one additional additive. For instance, another additive that is a different metal oxide or different metal chloride may be provided. In certain example embodiments, a vacuum insulated glass unit includes first and second glass substrates that are sealed together with a seal that includes the above-described composition.

1. A vacuum insulated glass (VIG) unit, comprising:
first and second substantially parallel, spaced apart glass substrates; an edge seal provided around a periphery of the first and second substrates to form a hermetic seal therebetween and at least partially defining a gap between the first and second substrates, wherein the gap is provided at a pressure less than atmospheric, wherein the edge seal is formed from a frit material at least initially having a composition including:(Ingredient)(Normalized Mole %)vanadium oxide~45-50%,barium oxide~20-23%, andzinc oxide~19-21%; andwherein the frit contains SnCl2 in an amount no greater than 6%.
