Method of identifying prebiotics and compositions containing the same

A method for identifying test agents that exhibit prebiotic activity on human skin commensal microorganisms and compositions that include such agents. The method includes providing a test culture of a test agent, a human skin commensal microorganism and a minimal carbon medium. The method provides a time efficient and cost effective way to predict in vivo prebiotic activity of a test agent on skin commensal microorganisms.

A method of identifying a test agent as a prebiotic agent, the method comprising: providing a first culture comprising the test agent, a quantity of a human skin commensal microorganism, and a minimal carbon medium; determining a metabolite level or a replication level of the human skin commensal microorganism of the first culture; comparing the metabolite level or replication level of the first culture to a control value, wherein the first control value is a metabolite level or a replication level in a culture of the human skin commensal microorganism of the first culture that is grown without the test agent, and wherein the metabolite or replication level correlates with the amount of growth of the human skin commensal microorganism; and identifying the test agent as a prebiotic agent when the replication level or the metabolic level is greater than the control value.
