The present invention relates to a mobile terminal performing a data backup function with an external device and a controlling method thereof. The mobile terminal according to the present invention comprises: a touch screen; an interface unit formed to be connected to the external device; a memory formed to store data; and a control unit performing a backup function for the backup of the data stored at the memory based on authentication information of the external device connected to the interface unit, wherein the control unit outputs screen information related to the backup function on the touch screen and transmits at least a portion of the data stored in the memory using the interface unit based on the performance of the backup function.
