METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DETERMINING A CONFIDENCE VALUE FOR AN ESTIMATED PARAMETER ASSOCIATED TO A PIXEL OF AN IMAGE

A method for determining a confidence value for an estimated parameter associated to a pixel of an image and an apparatus (20) configured to perform the method are described. The apparatus (20) comprises a parameter estimator (23) for estimating (10) the parameter associated to the pixel using a cost function, wherein the cost function is based on that pixel alone. A confidence evaluator (24) then determines (11) a confidence value for the estimated parameter using the information of neighboring pixels. A pixel analyzer (25) additionally determines (12) if the pixel is a critical pixel. If the pixel is a critical pixel,a confidence adapter (26) adapts (13) the determined confidence value for the estimated parameter as appropriate.
