The present invention relates to compositions comprising a steviol glycoside for use in restoring muscle glycogen by increasing the rate of glycogen re-synthesis in muscles that are depleted in glycogen due to exhaustive exercise and/or for use in treatment of muscle mass by increasing the rate of protein synthesis in muscles that are depleted in protein mass.

A method for treatment of muscle glycogen depletion and/or loss of muscle mass in a human subject in need thereof, the method comprising the step of orally administering to the human subject a composition comprising a steviol glycoside and/or an aglycone thereof, wherein said steviol glycoside and/or aglycone thereof is selected from the group consisting of rebaudioside A, rebaudioside B, rebaudioside C, rebaudioside D, rebaudioside E, rebaudioside F, dulcoside A, steviol, isosteviol, stevioside, steviolbioside, rubusoside, and mixtures thereof.
